Addressing a Need

Industry-giant CEI, the largest fleet management service provider in North America, wanted to lead the way and differentiate their staff as the safest drivers in the U.S. with a learning experience like no other!

At mobedia LX, we understand the powerful value of gamification. It’s used not only to entertain, but modify and shape behaviours and skills. Traditional forms of “e-Learning” run the risk of being impersonal and detached, making no emotional connection – whereas a fun, gamified environment promotes engagement, excitement, and greater retention. The benefits to the workplace are obvious. Making learning fun increases employees’ ability to retain skills by 40%. That’s less refresher training, and happier, more confident staff.

02

On or Off?

On The Job (OTJ) training is a highly effective, quick, and practical approach to learning. However, there are some scenarios where the job environment isn’t a safe one in which to make mistakes.

This is precisely the quandary CEI faced when searching for their solution to standardise levels of awareness across their driver workforce; testing hazard awareness on a real road is just not a safe way to learn. So… how do you effectively teach a driver to be ‘hazard aware’ without putting them right in the path of danger?

We provided a solution that delivered on all fronts!

A fully immersive practice environment in which learners take on the role of driver, with the opportunity to react to hazards as they arise in a gamified way, with greater reward for speedy, accurate responses. In other words, all the real hazards of the road, without the real danger – OTJ training… from their desk, tablet, or mobile phone!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Once we’d finalised a suite of scenarios with the client, our creative studio headed to shoot on location in Florida. Despite unprecedented levels of tropical rain, Denise Johnson, Senior Producer, seamlessly arranged location scouts, vehicles, props, actors, and stunt drivers from across the Atlantic to help create a suite of exciting, realistic videos.

And, of course, because we love to push the boundaries, we made use of a fantastic 360° camera. Adam Johnson, Head of Production, explains our approach:

“We mounted the 360° camera on the bonnet of the car, to act like the learners’ eyes. We filmed the entire environment from the outside while driving, and then overlaid our own virtual interior on top of the footage afterwards.”

04

You Spin me Right Round!

Steven Poulton, Lead Web Developer, adds a little more about how it all came together in the Development phase:

“The course uses WebGL to project an equirectilinear video onto a partial sphere in front of the camera. The camera is then rotated with the mouse to give the illusion of a 3D environment.”

Yeah, he’s a smart guy. To put it neatly, this innovative approach allowed us to recreate real life scenarios from all angles for the learner, putting them in the driver’s seat and letting them look around their environment in 360º glory!

The Theory

Just a little more proof for you that gamification – and our Hazard Awareness experience – is the bees’ knees. 89% of learners undertaking online learning comment that: “a point system would increase their engagement”. Adults tested in gamified eLearning experiences score 14% higher in assessments of skill, with a 9% increase in retention rate.

So our Hazard Awareness experience was like a game, where users could look around their entire environment, whilst driving, using their mouse pointer or the gyro in their handheld device.

Learners were required to click on hazards as they saw them arise, with quicker users being rewarded with higher scores, and slower users risking missing the hazard entirely and scoring a zero. Working through our suite of scenarios, learners gained awareness of typical hazards – and best practice solutions – on highways, city roads, suburban havens, and country roads in the dark or the day.

A pass mark was built into the experience, ensuring learners all reached an excellent level of competency before being certified as ‘Hazard Aware’.
